Community Talks! Vol. 1, ep. 32.
Every year in Sweden, since 1988, when Christmas is around the corner we get flashing news, many papers and interviews, and expert statements on every social platform. And this year is no different.
What is the fuss about then? It is the big announcement of this year's Christmas gift (årets julklapp). We have seen the spiket mat (spikmatta), the camping stove (stormkök), the robot vacuum cleaner (robottdamsugare), and last year the event ticket (evenemangsbiljetten).
There are some criteria that need to be fulfilled for something to become “årets julklapp”. It must be new or have attracted new interest during the year. It must also be sold in large numbers and represent the times we live in. So how about this year? Is it another tech gadget? Or something that follows the health trend? Well, it has nothing to do with tech and some to do with health, this year’s Christmas gift is the homemade knitted piece (det hemstickade plagget)!
For once I’m excited. I do enjoy crafts. I’m very into crocheting, but not yet knitting. The news though got me excited about learning it. Just imagine the feeling that you would get putting on a sweater that you made yourself!
Well, I might be getting a bit ahead of myself now, my first knitted piece probably won’t be something that I actually can wear. Let’s be honest, handwork takes a lot of time and patients. So, I’m sorry to disappoint my nearest and dearest, but you won’t be getting matching sweaters as Christmas gifts this year. But who knows, maybe next year when I’ve had time to really channel my inner grandma.
3 reasons to start knitting (or any type of handwork for that matter)
- It’s good for your mental health! It is perhaps an outdated expression, but for me it’s therapy. While doing handwork, and especially while learning, you need to give it all of your focus. In today’s society where we have so many things trying to steal our focus at any time, it's a good practice to just focus on one thing.
- You get to be creative and also get unique handmade pieces.
- And last but not least, it’s fun!
So let us all embrace out inner grandmas and start knitting! And if you try and feel like you fail, don’t worry, you can always wear your sweater for the “ugly Christmas sweater competition”.

Great article. I tried to start knitting a jumper for my dog a year ago and became frustrated :D but this makes me want to try again! Will need to get my needles and yarn out.
You have to keep us updated when you create something you can wear!

Thanks for sharing this with us. I didn't know about the "årets julklapp", but it sounds fun to start knitting or doing crochet.I'll add that to my next year's resolutions, and who knows, maybe next year we become knitting/crochet buddies and we exchange crochet Christmas gifts. 🤗
