Community Talks! Vol. 1, ep. 29.
I’m writing this post on a rainy day in Malmo, thinking about how lucky I am to live in Sweden, but being born in Colombia. When I tell people in Sweden that I’m from Colombia and that I decided to stay here, I receive comments like: “Why did you stay in Sweden when you could be in Colombia?” “Oh! Colombia must be a paradise compared to Sweden, why here?”. Well, trust me, I acknowledge how amazing and beautiful Colombia is, but I do have my reasons to stay in Sweden too—plus I like it here!
However, every time I get a comment like that, I just tell them they should visit Colombia for many reasons. However, here are 3 reasons that you who are reading this post, should visit Colombia.
- People will make you feel like home – You are always very welcome
In Colombia, we love that people come to visit us. You will be received with a big smile, food, fresh coffee, and a free guided tour. And most probably, you’ll be invited to people’s homes to stay the night or share with them a meal. So, if you already have a Colombian friend or you make one during your trip, trust me you are already part of their family and you are welcome to visit every time you want.
- Food is fantastic – You will try and see fruits and other foods you didn’t know existed
Welcome to paradise! In Colombia you will find different flavours, fruits you haven’t tried before but I will guarantee you will love them. Also, we have a lot of different snacks like empanadas, arepas, almojabanas, and more. And if you are visiting different cities in Colombia, you will have the opportunity to try different dishes like “ajiaco” in Bogota, “bandeja paisa” in Medellin, “chuleta valluna” in Cali, and “cazuela de mariscos” in Cartagena (and much more I can’t tell you right now).
- Diversity, culture, music, and art – You will be amazed by nature
If you like the mountains, the desert, the forest, or the beach, you have all of this and much more in Colombia. There you will also find different races, cultures, climates, and traditions, but we all share the same joy and embrace the diversity. There are 59 protected natural areas in Colombia, which have different climates, landscapes, and ecosystems. Many national parks offer unique experiences, such as hiking and water sports, as well as the protection of wildlife, ecosystems, cultural heritage, and architectural heritage.
Places I recommend to you to visit are:
- El parque Tayrona
- El desierto de la Tatacoa
- The Caño Cristales river (a river of 7 colors)
- Eje Cafetero (for coffee lovers)
- The Amazonas
- Villa de Leyva
- And of course, the main cities like: Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, and Cartagena.
Every place is unique, and of course every city is a different world.
If you want to know more about Colombia, feel free to ask me, and I will guide you the best I can. And as we say in Colombia: The only risk is wanting to stay.

Fair enough Nicky Lilja! Next time I'll do it! 🤗
Sterling Figueroa let me know when you go! 🤩0
I have always wanted to go to Colombia and this just makes me want to go ASAP! The thought of fresh empanadas alone is an incentive :D. As Nicky mentions, I am also curious as to learn more about why you chose to stay in Sweden over Colombia - I look forward to reading that if you write it :).0
