Community Talks! Vol. 1, ep. 18.
The discussion is on the table, so please have a seat, and let’s discuss this hot & sweet topic 🍕. But first, before we get our hands dirty and greasy, let me tell you some facts I found on the internet 😱
Let’s start!
- It has been said that pizza is an Italian creation that showed up in Naples, in the 1600s, but similar foods have been around since the Neolithic age – where flatbreads had different sorts of toppings.
- Also, there are some sources that say that ancient Greeks gave birth to the earliest version of pizza – large slices of bread were topped with veggies, potatoes, spices, and olive oil.
- Pizza was considered to be peasants’ food, but in 1889, Italian Queen Margherita during a traveling became curious about it and tasted it. Afterward, she eventually called Chef Rafaelle Esposito to make some pizzas for her. The chef carefully selected ingredients that represented the colors of the Italian flag and the Pizza Margherita was created (fresh basil, mozzarella cheese, and tomatoes).
- The world got to know pizza after World War II.
Now that we know how pizza was created and some history around it, let’s see how Hawaiian pizza was created.
- It is stated that Sam Panopoulos, a Greek-born Canadian created the first Hawaiian pizza (inspired by Chinese sweet and savory food flavors) at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, Canada in 1962.
- Sam named his new creation the “Hawaiian pizza” as the canned pineapple he used was inspired by the Tiki culture (from Hawaii), hugely popular after World War II.
- The classic union of ham and pineapple was an accident, a result of only having a few different toppings to work with.
So, what does it make a pizza a pizza? Well, originally there are three basic things that make a pizza a pizza: dough, tomato sauce, and cheese. But before you argue with me, yes there are the white versions sans tomato, but that’s an exception to the rule.
Now, with all the above being said, is Hawaiian pizza, pizza? 🍕
Yes, Hawaiian pizza is pizza even if you love it or hate it! In my opinion, I love it and I love trying new different pizzas flavors because I believe that the best flavors can always be found in the diversity of the ingredients.
Do you love or hate Hawaiian pizza? And which other pizza flavors do you like?

I personally like Hawaiian pizza, the sweetness with the salty on the pizza and the acidity from tomatoes is a good mix. If you wanna go for vegetarian option then change the pork to olives, it makes wonders. (Saw it in Deadpool so decided to try it and it works amazing)

LOVE Hawaii pizza! However, my utmost favorite is a Bolognese with pineapples 😍
Guess no one else likes it, since I have never found it on any meny anywhere except for the small pizzeria where I grew up (that later went out of business - if it was because of their wild and crazy topping mix, we will never know). Let me know if you've tried it or seen it anywhere!

I could write a whole essay on what kind of pizzas I like but I would like to suggest to add an egg on any type of pizza! I promise you it is YUMMY.
