Recommended image format and color settings in inriver

This article provides guidance and good practice recommendations for original images uploaded to inriver, for example regarding file format, color space, and color profile.

The recommendations are for images that are to be used in printed material as well as on the web.

Image recommendations

• We recommend having at least 75 dpi in resolution for the web and 300 dpi images for Print. 
• Create the original at a resolution for Print (300 dpi) or your highest quality requirement. If the requirement is digital-only it will be an absolute resolution rather than dpi. 
• It's an advantage to have high-resolution images in RGB/sRGB format if they are to be used both for Print and on the web.
• Another advantage is for the images to have the same dimensions if possible. In this way it becomes easier to convert and redo them as needed.
• Historically, images for Print were in CMYK and in RGB for the web. Today we use the image service ImageMagick® in the background for conversion. However, sometimes the conversion between CMYK and RGB is not optimal. We therefore recommend you to try to avoid CMYK images if the images are not to be used for Print.
• Save the image as CMYK if you know that Print will be important now or in the future.
• There might be a slight color difference when converting to RGB. Keep in mind that the final presentation depends on the customer's screen quality and calibration. The color of the image will therefore rarely be represented accurately anyway.
• When reducing the image size for web (screen), choose an appropriate maximum resolution such as HD (1920 x 1080) for the end presentation. Some sites may provide a magnified image and it may therefore need to be larger than HD.
