Issue
In the Control Center, when attempting to delete a segment, an error is shown.
Explanation
By design, a segment that is used by users and/or entities should not be deleted until it has been removed from said user/entities.
This is by design, because different users may want a certain outcome after a segment is deleted.
However, what outcome these users may want may differ:
- One user may want the entities removed when the segment is deleted.
- Another user may want the entities moved to another custom segment.
- A third user may want the entities returned to the original DEFAULT segment.
Solution
Prerequisites
Your inriver role must have the proper permissions to handle segmentation.
To achieve any of the following outcomes, the user will need to have the proper permissions to perform the necessary steps in Enrich. These permissions are set in the Control Center.
The permissions that are needed:
- UpdateEntity
- DeleteEntity
- inRiverEnrich
- ChangeEntitySegment
If you are unsure what permissions you need and/or have, set the user as an Administrator for the segment you're about to delete.
Note! The Administrator role has all available permissions as default. We recommend to only use this alternative if you're confident that you know your way around the inriver solution and its settings. If not, you might change somethings that's irreversible.
Outcomes
The below sections describe the three common outcomes that a user may want.
To delete segment AND entities
- In the Web Portal > Enrich, open the Query Editor by clicking the Query Editor icon in the upper right corner.
- Set the condition to Segment > Contains > Any, then check the checkbox for the segment you want to delete. Then click Search.
- Click Select all to select all the entities from the search result. Note! The result shows all the entities included in the segment you searched for.
- Open the Navigation menu in the upper right corner and click Delete Selection.
- Confirm that you want to delete the selected entities by clicking OK.
- The entities have been deleted. To continue, go to the section Final Step: To Remove Users from Segment in this article.
To delete a segment AND change to another segment for entities
- In the Web Portal > Enrich, open the Query Editor by clicking the Query Editor icon in the upper right corner.
- Set the condition to Segment > Contains > Any, then check the checkbox for the segment you want to delete. Then click Search.
- Click Select all to select all the entities from the search result. Note! The result shows all the entities included in the segment you searched for.
- Open the Navigation menu in the upper right corner and click Mass update segments.
- In the popup, select the segment you want to move the entities to from the drop-down menu. Then click Change segment.
- You have now moved the entities to another segment. To continue, go to the section Final Step: To Remove Users from Segment in this article.
To delete a segment AND reset segment for entities to 'default'
- Repeat steps 1-5 specified in the section To Delete a Segment AND Change to Another Segment for Entities and select Default instead of a custom segment.
- When you have moved the entities to the Default segment, go to the section Final Step: To Remove Users from Segment in this article.
Final step: To remove users from segment
- Log in to Control Center and the environment where the segment has been activated.
- Click User Management.
- Click Users.
- Sort out users that are using the segment by specifying the segment's name in the inriver Role window. Then click Edit on a user row.
- Click the Role that is related to the segment you want to delete.
(Administrator in this example). - In the view that opens, deselect the checkbox for the segment that you want to delete. Then click OK.
(In this example we're deleting the segment "Support brand"). - You can now delete the segment as intended.
Good to know
You have to repeat the steps in the section Final Step: To Remove Users from Segment for each user that has been assigned a role with a segment that you want to delete.
